There's a striking similarity between Fourth Floor Collapse and Cordrazine. Michael Miller's soaring vocals on the single Stories Unglued have an uncanny resemblance to those of Hamish from Cordrazine. That being said it’s certainly not a bad thing.
On this double A-Side single Fourth Floor Collapse show their versatility as an act. The songs range from the soaring Stories Unglued to the more minimalist Surround Sound, which has been getting a bit of Triple J airplay of late.
In my less than humble opinion, Surround Sound should have been the second single as it is the best track on this disc. It begins was a Radiohead-esque free noise jangle and then breaks into a very simple layered tune, that could have quite easily come off The Bends.
When Michael Miller breaks into the chorus, his voice again soars and the song distinguishes itself from being just another Radiohead wannabe. The other tracks on this single Terrified Legend and Country Death, whilst being commendable tracks, pale when compared to the strength of Stories Unglued and Surround Sound. The performance of these tracks seems to lack the same passion and conviction, as the two album tracks.
Fourth Floor Collapse are yet another example of why I really should to move to Perth at some point. The music scene there is so diverse, productive and, well, good - it puts Sydney and Melbourne to shame.
